Stand up to the Bully!

The company had to deal with an employee who had (majorly) shouted at another employee.  It was a bullying situation, the problem was that the stories about this guy were legend.  He had chased someone out of the store and they were so scared that they hid in the police station to get away from him!

So the problem that they faced was that to go straight to dismissal for raising his voice at someone was impossible because we had accepted his behaviour by not acting for so long.

Using the HRtoolkit documents they invited him to a disciplinary meeting and the outcome was that he was given a Written Warning, put on a Performance Improvement Plan, and it was a condition of the warning that he attended Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) Coaching.

6 months later they promoted him.  He had made such a huge turnaround in his behaviour.  His wife even came into the company to thank them, because his behaviour had changed in his personal life too.

He was a big guy, and throughout his life he had used his size to bully and intimidate people.  And his learning, throughout his life, was that this got him what he wanted.  But it was such ingrained behaviour that he was not aware of what he was doing.  Making him see himself as others saw him was a fabulous gift to him in all aspects of his life.
